Introduction

Issues concerning energy, its production and consumption, potential for savings, as well as fossil fuel reserves and opportunities for renewable energy sources (RES) utilisation are one of the most debated currently.

Industry, transport as well as heat and heat water production for buildings traditionally belong to the most energy demanding fields. Energy saving opportunities in the building sector are undoubtedly discussed by professionals. However, mainly because of financial reasons, general public including public authorities may perceive energy saving potential in residential and public buildings as marginal.

Project CEC5 acts directly in this area. Its ambition is to initiate a discussion about energy saving possibilities in buildings, especially in planning process of their construction or reconstruction. One of the project overall goals is to create a tool for energy and environmental certification of buildings and to offer such tool to public institutions as an “open source”. Moreover, the CEC5 project wants to emphasize the fact that, high quality planning (including such certification) could lead to significant energy and financial savings during buildings maintenance and operation.

Another key goal of the CEC5 project is to provide real demonstration of RES utilisation through RES installation in selected public buildings and thus provoke further interest of public authorities – mainly schools in case of Slovakia - in similar projects.
